I would need more time to think in depth on better answers, but in terms of short story-- basic as it sounds, "The Lottery" is always a good one. There's also one I believe is called "The Large Ant". They are both about human nature in their own ways, I enjoy them. Not very obscure, but still largely enjoyable. Speaking of not very obscure, I'm a sucker for the original Lord of The Rings series, and the poignant (albiet problematic) works of Lovecraft. For an obscure nonfiction novel, there is a biography of Sessue Hayakawa I find to be a good read. His life is facinating.

i mean my basic answer for long is like. all the discworld books. which aren't long by themselves but as a series it goes on a bit! ooh, and the um. what was it. the wayfarers series! those are soooo good.
Good choices. Oh, I also enjoy Hitchhikers Guide. Maybe that seems an odd pick for me, but still.
how did i skip over that, i literally referenced arthur dent the other day when i was making blts. i kinda prefer the radio drama for the guide though! the performances are just so iconic to me.
annnd uh, no i see it! i see hitchikers guide. there's this odd combination of wonder at the complexity of it all, exhaustion with the stupditiy of it all, and nihilism about the banality of cruelty.

hmmm. if you wanna go legal audible has them? they're the bbc radio 4 versions. primary phase, secondary phase, tertiary phase, quandary phase, and quintessential phase. there was also a sixth one that was exclusive to it and made years later based off unfinished adams writings but i kinda dislike that ending compared to the one for quint.
actually check your library audiobook app too. and uh, other websites! they're so good i have them saved on my phone. i used to fall asleep listening to them when dad would take me on road trips, hehe.
Aw. Well, isn't that endearing? I'll check for them now. It might be something nice to wind down with. Oh, in terms of childrens novels I'd also like to mention The Search For Wondla. Not to be entirely unrelated. It's stuck with me.
ooh that's good. i loved aliens ate my homework. and i found the myth books by robert asprin to be... kinda perfect when i was a tween? they've got some problems but it was a fun way to learn about the idea of a multiverse!
