Selfishness is a neutral trait, and a lesser understood concept. Yes, being without any regard for others to the point of hurting them is selfish, but so is trying to befriend someone who tells you they don't want to, even if they end up softening up. So is killing an animal to make your dinner. So is insisting other people choose what to do when you're hanging out. Everyone is selfish and everyone is capable of selfishness. It's really not that deep. It isn't a bad thing. It's neutral. You don't need to fear being selfish. Especially if the fear of selfishness is stopping you from saving yourself.
