Silly little reminder that this Tuesday on #RosesPoolsideDriveIn we will be showing Silent Hill (2006) 8 PM EST, doors will open at around 7:30ish for some chilling before the movie begins. It is a film about a mother who travels to the mysterious town of Silent Hill in search of answers concerning her daughter. What begins as an attempt to understand what has happened gradually becomes something considerably stranger, as the town reveals itself to be a place where reality, memory, guilt, and nightmare seem to have rather poor boundaries. I would recommend going into this one with as little information as possible. Silent Hill is at its best when you allow its atmosphere to accumulate around you rather than attempting to immediately decipher what every strange image or unsettling event is supposed to mean. The town is, after all, unlikely to explain itself simply because you have asked politely. It is bleak, atmospheric, grotesque, and occasionally quite beautiful in its own peculiar way. There is something almost admirable about a film that looks at the concept of a charming little town and decides that what it really needs is considerably more fog, ash, religious fanaticism, and horrifying creatures. So please enjoy the descent into Silent Hill. And if anyone discovers a town mysteriously covered in fog after the screening, I recommend resisting the scholarly impulse to investigate. Unquirk for content warnings.
