Telling people I'm from New York is always a bit mixed. Mostly because sometimes I forget to say 'state' right after it. It's awkward when their dreams of New York City are instantly dulled by the fact I lived in the forest.

From my understanding, York was it's own place. Then, New Amsterdam was made in America, and then renamed to New York after a duke. Do not quote me on this, however, my research is very surface level.
