My last thoughts on The Thing before I go to sleep; great movie overall with a fascinating setup (preexisting group isolation) and a realistic way that things like trust and communication would break down. FANTASTIC practical effects!! That shit was gnarly for real. This movie being a group of only men really adds to it as an almost case study bit. They all think THEY can lead/take charge of the situation. Individualistic as opposed to an actual group effort. The ending being vague like that did make me question if there was actually more time left in the actual movie, but when I gave it some more thought, I kinda like the open-endedness of it. #najmwatches #thething

✨🍭🕷️ Not much different from your take, although the gendered aspect is a little less relevant. We're kind of all encouraged to be mistrusting of each other regardless of whatever identities we have. Ooh but the ending!!!! Okay so there are two prevalent theories RE whether or not Childs is a thing. Theory one, Thing Childs, points to how Mac's breath is crazy visible in the air and Childs has nothing. Theory two, Human Childs, is that the cinematographer made a point throughout the movie of filming later confirmed things in such a way that they had no light in their eyes, and Childs has eye shines in the final scene. I personally find the human Childs theory more compelling, but the narrative implications of Childs being a thing and giving up to just die with Mac is wayyy more interesting OH OH you might like to read The Things!!!!! Oooooooo, that’s really interesting. I didn’t super notice a Shine In Their Eyes ngl, but that’s worth a rewatch to look more at the details. The end though I really like. My personal thought is that no one survives. Either they make a suicide pact if they’re both human. Or Mac uses the alcohol to burn Thing!Childs and then waits out for the storm to claim him in an effort to also make sure there’s nothing else moving that shouldn’t be. But the last one you mentioned of both Mac and Childs(?) both giving up? Both being tired and calling it quits? That’s fascinating. But, the caveat being that if it was indeed Thing!Childs, him waiting out to die in the cold with Mac and freezing wouldn’t matter, he could just as easily be defrosted eventually by some rescue crew and the cycle restarts.
