In my experience? Poorly at first. Though for me it technically has not happened yet.
We can only do our best, in their wake. It's all anyone can do, really. But perhaps we as gods must shoulder the lofty aspiration of one day eclipsing them, for the sake of those beneath us.
I fear I have already eclipsed them, though not necessarily for the better. There is too much of me to fill the mold I was left with.
