the sentient objects- "darkners"- typically prefer to serve and protect real people- "lightners"- due to their nature as objects. the helm would likely make you a damsel in distress story trope of sorts in some attempt to keep you safe, to try and make you happy. in which case it would send whatever the guns turn into to slow down whoever tries to come to your rescue- emphasis on slow down, not kill. but fair point. its.. it can be a terrifying experience.
