You were so young, but the air smelt of blood and smoke and burning flesh. You could taste it in your mouth, acrid and burning. Ash dusted you, burns hurting where fire had licked your skin like hateful tongues. Your hair a tangled mess from running. "Stay here. Hide. Do not leave." Her words were hushed and sibilant, her chelicera clicking in a way that soothed you even in this hell you found yourself in. You were so small. She placed you in the wooden bucket, the rope creaking and swaying as you settled in, as if threatening to break. "What's wrong?" You asked, voice quiet and hoarse. The look in her eyes was pained, and you were too young at the time to understand she was warring with what to tell you. "The seal was broken," she said finally as she stroked your cheek. Hiding a lie in storyteller truth. Something for your young mind to understand, to hold onto that wasn't the harsh reality. "The seal? But…" "Shhh… It is ok. I will go fix it, and then I will return. Do not worry, little grub." You didn't recognize the lie in her words. Her smile vicious, fanged, and utterly soft for you. Slowly, she lowered you down. The night sky, the flames, dulling and quieting as you soon went deeper into the roughly built stone walls. Soon the above nothing more than a small circle as the bucket's edge settled against rough, wet stone. It was not quiet, the screams and cries echoed, but it was dulled.
