“Worship at the altar” is one of those old human phrases that became filthy through overuse and honesty. Originally, an altar is a sacred place. A structure built for devotion, sacrifice, ritual. You kneel before it because something upon it is greater than you are, or because you want something from it badly enough to lower yourself willingly. Humans turned that metaphor toward desire almost immediately. Bodies became altars. Beds became altars. Lovers became little household gods people ruined themselves over in private.
