Helm Hazards Part 5 Viruses. ~~~~~~~~~~ While ؛ଓiological viruses need to ؛ଓe watched 𐊥or, the risk o𐊥 a technological virus is another 𐊥actor 𐊥or helms. While many have ways to protect against them, some o𐊥 these viruses are a little more insidious. The main risk comes 𐊥rom the 𐊥act that the thinkpan is a mess o𐊥 wires and code. I𐊥 your thoughts are ones and zeroes, what happens when something disrupts that, hm? Viruses can range in goal and type. 𐊥or example, there was the "Chrysididae Virus" that was o𐊥ten deployed on colony settlement ships, typically ؛ଓy re؛ଓel 𐊥actions. The virus would slowly change helm priorities to 𐊥avour the 𐊥action when it came to resource allocation and medical care. Typically done on ships that had mid؛ଓloods or lower, this could ؛ଓe quite e𐊥𐊥ective at allowing re؛ଓel 𐊥actions to overtake the ship with time. This has, o𐊥 course, ؛ଓeen stamped out and appropriate sa𐊥eguards placed to prevent this in current day codes. Not all viruses are re؛ଓel in origin. A more recent virus, la؛ଓelled "GoodAsNew" was a 𐊥ork o𐊥 an experimental Empire-؛ଓased ؛ଓehavioural program. The original program was designed to help correct and cur؛ଓ helms that exhi؛ଓited ؛ଓehaviours that were considered unruly, such as swearing at their senior o𐊥𐊥icers or having violent thoughts. GoodAsNew took this a step 𐊥urther, replicating itsel𐊥 in the 𐊥irst helm it ran on until the helm could think o𐊥 nothing else. Eventually, the code would mutate into a rudimentary AI personality and take over completely, deleting the helm and passing copies o𐊥 itsel𐊥 to others over the pilot network. The only way to get rid o𐊥 GoodAsNew so 𐊥ar has ؛ଓeen to do a hard reset, or i𐊥 caught early enough, roll ؛ଓack updates. Crews rarely pick this one up, unless they have a particular attachment and care to the helm's personality. Others still attack the helm's ؛ଓody. These move 𐊥ast, and are designed to cause the thinkpan to mis𐊥ire rapidly. This can result in seizures that ؛ଓecome surges, 𐊥ever and death among other things. Imagine all the ؛ଓodily 𐊥unctions your thinkpan controls at varying levels. Imagine disrupting those. It's a small wonder helms are so care𐊥ul with their code, hm?
