Alternia is, contrary to what the frightened and poorly educated may tell you, extraordinarily haunted. This is not a metaphor. It is as literal of a fact as saying Alternia is a planet. Ghosts are common enough. Most are harmless, if repetitive. The dead have very little imagination once deprived of a body. They linger around places of emotional significance, reenact the circumstances of their deaths, rattle objects, whisper names into ventilation shafts, and occasionally possess the living when desperation exceeds good manners. Shadow droppers are considerably less sentimental. You may recognize their presence by sounds originating above you where no crawlspace exists, sudden impacts against rooftops, or the distinct sensation that something has been following your movements from the ceiling for several minutes. Looking up is rarely useful. They are generally gone by then. Rainbow drinkers are not ghosts at all, though frightened lowblood folklore frequently conflates the two. One particularly charming theory suggests that they merely conduct photosynthesis, hence their unusual tolerance for sunlight, and that the blood drinking is little more than committed mythological roleplay by trolls who read the old stories and decided cannibalism sounded appropriately traditional. I would not recommend testing this theory personally. They are quite alive, depending on how generously you define the term, and the glow is not an invitation to investigate. If you see one feeding, discretion is advisable. If one has taken an interest in you, discretion is irrelevant. There are also lusus-haunts, residual psionic impressions, revenants, doomed selves, things produced by poorly controlled chucklevoodoos, and several varieties of apparition which exist primarily because Alternia has spent thousands of sweeps giving the universe excellent reasons to hold a grudge.
