From what I've researched, these anchoresses were of noble women in medieval times. Usually they are sealed inside a room attached to a church, with small windows. One to look inward into the church for sermons. One into the servant quarters to be served good. And another into the rest of the world, usually approached by many for holy advice or spiritual guidance.
