A colleague asked me recently why we don't just lean into the "trolls are inherently evil" angle that so naturally arises in resistance groups. After all, if the troll race really is extinct save the Batterwitch, then it's not as if we'll ever meet any kind trolls to be prejudiced against. The first reason is that, on principle, I simply think prejudice is wrong. And you can quote me on that. The second is more subtle. By describing trolls as evil, we are unwittingly falling directly into the Batterwitch's own propaganda. A recruit hears that Trolls are evil - they then question what we mean by "evil." The answer comes - they are violent, belligerent, cruel. This is their natural state. The recruit then encounters Imperial propaganda, lauding these traits as good, natural, noble. The Imperial propaganda machine is powerful and inescapable, and no one is truly immune. We, in our ignorance, just handed the Batterwitch a new sympathizer. A much more effective narrative is the truth - the Batterwitch ruined her planet. Her people were miserable, and then they all died. This paints every single bit of her rhetoric in a new light - She can use all the right words if she wants, but her track record speaks for itself.
