Basically yeah. They have good reason to warn you that. At least knowing that it is coming gives you time to prepare. As far as I'm aware combat is a huge part of it so I'd brush up there.

I am probably not someone to ask, since I don't have a strife specibus, but, what weapons are you the most comfortable dedicating yourself to? I'd probably settle on what you'd see yourself using on the long term, but I hear getting extra specibi down the line is possible if you see yourself branching out.
Hell yeah. The game will give you opportunity to make a variety of knives depending on what you mix them with. Someone used some of the machines from it to turn my baseball bat into a bat that could project orbs of energy I could hit like baseballs at enemies.
Get creative, it's probably the best tool you'll have to win.
