If you're unaware of my last post I was requested to explain yuri from an anon in my ask 8ox. There I 8riefly mentioned Class-S relationships and then commented on how I wanted to divulge more a8out the dynamic. So I present: Ms. Serkets lesson in Class-S relationships. Trigger Warnings: #Suicide #Homopho8ia In the 20th century of Japan young girls were encouraged to pursue education past elementary gradeschooling. This expansion of education com8ined with Japans gender segregation laws led to more female students attending previously underattended all girls academies. Within these academies a distinct schoolgirl culture grew and within that culture a distinct dynamic 8etween girls referred to as a "Class S relationship" formed. Class S (also known as "esu kankei" and standing for "sister") relationships are intense, emotionally dependant, monogamous friendships 8etween two female students. It is dependant on the region or school 8ut typically it is to 8e 8etween one upperclassman student and one lowerclassman student with the upperclassman often 8eing the one to engage in the courtship of her "ome" (or "lover"). She will consult with her closest peers to assure no-one else is enamored with her lover and if no one is she will hand off a ri88on to the group who will then deliver it to the one she intends to court. If the lover accepts she will tie her hair up using the ri88on and the two will 8egin their relationship. Alternatively, one girl will write a letter to the other detailing her desire to start a relationship and the two will exchange gifts to esta8lish their courtship. The two students, despite how their relationship 8egins, will engage in activities typical of a romantic relationship. They would particip8te in non-sexual physically intim8te acts, write letters, give romantic gifts, and devote themselves to the other half of their class-s partner with the intention to grow together and reach a spiritual 8alance. Unfortun8tely, this relationship is only viewed as a means to "practice" for when they were to gradu8te and enter a heterosexual relationship. It is frowned upon for two girls in a Class S relationship to continue the relationship post-graduation 8ecause it is not only viewed as a temporary dynamic 8ut it is viewed as childish 8y the gre8ter society. It leads one to question why these relationships rose in popularity if these students knew that they would inevita8ly end? Why even choose to engage? In asking that question you will find your answer. In this era of Japan arranged marriages were the standard and young girls lacked the option of choice in who they would inevita8ly 8e with. In school, where it was just a culture of other young girls who thought and acted similarly to them, they had a choice in who they could court. They were a8le to experience the fantasy of picking someone who could understand their struggle without the pressures of their family or the push of the patriarchy. They are allowed a moment of freedom 8efore their culture will inevita8ly rip it away from them. It is difficult to say if every schoolgirl who committed themself to a Class S relationship was a les8ian or had romantic feelings for their partner or not. 8ut it is not difficult to presume that most were. As the years went on and western influences that discussed the psychology of homosexuality continued to 8leed into Japan, Class S relationships 8ecame more and more ta8oo. With this, the dou8le-suicide r8tes of pairs of young schoolgirls and female gradu8tes increased. Sociologists and newpapers at the time were reluctant to connect this to the phenomenon of Class S relationships 8ecause they truly did not 8elieve that these young women could have loved eachother. One young woman, No8uko Yoshiya, who had 8een engaged in one of these Class S relationships and denied marrying after graduation, went on to 8ecome one of the most famous authors of her era in Japan. In her early work she wrote a8out tragic homoerotic relationships 8etween two women. These stories often lacked happy endings and were em8edded with a perpetual misery of the f8te that would eventually tear the two women apart. In doing this she esta8lished a genre known as "Class S literature". I think I will end the lesson there.
