Tonight's film for #RosesPoolsideDriveIn is The Cabin in the Woods, directed by Drew Goddard and released in 2011. It would be tempting to describe this as a simple horror movie. Five young people, an isolated cabin, an unfortunate collection of circumstances, and the sort of ominous atmosphere that should probably persuade sensible people to turn around and go home. But The Cabin in the Woods is rather more interested in the conventions of horror than you might initially expect. It plays with the stories we think we already understand, and with our expectations of what a horror film is supposed to do. So I recommend going into it with as little prior knowledge as possible. Allow the film to establish its rules before you start looking for the seams. Or, preferably, start looking for them immediately. I certainly intend to. Be there at 8 pm EST. As per usual, food and drink will be freely available, other types of #substances are BYO. Unquirk for content warnings.
