Th9ugh this was pitched t9 me as a sex c9medy drama, I f9und it much heavier in the #Drama categ9ry than anything else. Sure, there were individual c9medic 6eats – human Seth R9gen's J9e thr9wing his 6ack 9ut and firmly derailing what had 6een ramping up t9 6e an enj9ya6le night after h9urs 9f tensi9n was amusing in a juvenile, slapstick s9rt 9f way – and there was n9 sh9rtage 9f vulgar discussi9ns a69ut f9rnicati9n (much t9 my chagrin), 6ut I m9stly f9und it t9 6e an unc9mf9rta6le insight int9 dysfuncti9nal relati9nships. S9me 9f this, I'm sure, is due t9 me 6eing firmly 9utside the target audience 9f this piece 9f media. As s9me9ne wh9 is pr9udly #Celi6ate and theref9re str9ngly disinterested in relati9nships, I f9und it 6affling. Fr9m the 9pening scene, a nearly inc9mprehensi6le argument a69ut the f9rthc9ming get-t9gether that makes up the m9vie's pl9t, the hus6and and wife du9 9f R9gan and Wilde g9 t9 great lengths t9 repeatedly pr9ve t9 the audience that they are inc9mpati6le with 9ne an9ther in s9me very fundamental ways. It left me frustrated, the way Angela w9uld c9nstantly pick at and needle J9e any time he v9iced his perspective 9n s9mething despite, in my 9pini9n, having 96jectively c9rrect takes. There is may6e 9ne thing they agree 9n thr9ugh9ut the entire film, that 6eing a pr9p9siti9n given t9 them 6y their enigmatic, t99-c99l-f9r-sch99l upstairs neigh69rs played 6y human Penel9pe Cruz and human Edward N9rt9n, and even that g9es p99rly 6ecause 9f a 6reakd9wn in c9mmunicati9n 6etween 9ur main characters. The m9vie edges y9u with the uncertainty 9f whether any given interacti9n will rekindle the spark that J9e and Angela must have had all 9f th9se sweeps ag9. This sense 9f unease permeates thr9ugh9ut even the filmmaking itself. The #Claustr9ph96ic (#Metaph9ricallySpeaking) nature 9f the setting 6eing c9nfined t9 a single apartment really starts t9 sink in as the pl9t unf9lds and y9u realize that y9u, t99, are trapped in these r99ms with these pe9ple just 6arely h9lding it t9gether, f9rced t9 c9nfr9nt their issues al9ng with them. The c9nclusi9n is an 9pen-ended questi9n regarding the c9uple's marriage, 6ut in my 9pini9n, the answer is clear as night. If these tw9 pe9ple are g9ing t9 have any future t9gether, it needs t9 6e apart. In fact, may6e 69th c9uples w9uld 6e happier swapping after all. H9wever, I cann9t say I am ultimately surprised that their relati9nship w9und up underexpl9red. Female direct9rs have a tendency t9 undervalue and d9wnplay the deep em9ti9nal 69nd 6etween tw9 men in fav9r 9f 9veremphasizing the interi9rity 9f their female characters.
