It crouched in the dark where the trees grew too close together, hidden beneath a canopy that smothered the moonlight. No name belonged to it. No shape could be trusted. The eye would catch a silhouette between the trunks, only for it to be somewhere else a heartbeat later. A wet tearing sound drifted through the forest. Something fed in the darkness. The creature hunched over its kill, its movements jerky and animalistic one moment, unnaturally deliberate the next. Black fluids stained the leaves beneath it. Bones cracked between unseen jaws. Every sound seemed muffled, swallowed by the night itself, as though the woods were trying to hide what was happening. Then the feeding stopped. Silence spread through the trees. Far away, a hiker's flashlight bobbed along a narrow trail. The creature lifted what might have been a head. It did not rush. It did not growl. It simply watched. Patient. The forest seemed to bend around its presence. Branches swayed without wind. Shadows stretched where no shadows should have existed. The hiker continued onward, unaware that something had already chosen them. The thing slipped between the trees. Not running. Not walking. Just appearing closer each time it was glimpsed. A shape behind one trunk. Then another. Then gone entirely. Only the feeling remained: the certainty that something was moving through the darkness alongside the trail, keeping pace, waiting for exhaustion, for panic, for a wrong turn into the deeper woods. The creature did not hunt because it was hungry. It hunted because the forest was quiet, and it preferred the sound of people disappearing.
