Never ask midwesterners, "what is a casserole?" They'll look at each other, then look back at you, then look at each other, realizing that it's very difficult to define a casserole in any other way than fridge slop baked in sauce underneath the layer of cheese, literally any kind of fridge slop you can imagine. It's not really appetizing to say that a casserole is literally whatever was left in their fridge thrown in a pan, and it's embarrassing that it isn't anything more special than that. They can't just explain normally, their midwestern usa pride is on the line. So, instead of telling you what a casserole is, one of them pipes up and says they put noodles in theirs, then the other one pipes up and gets mad because noodles don't belong in casserole and it should only ever be filled with rice, and then the other one calls them out for using tater tots on top instead of bread crumbs, and the first one is offended that they would use anything other than tater tots. In the end, you're left still confused and with zero clue of what a casserole is, while they continue to fight politely for the next 3 hours over which kinds of casserole it's appropriate to add french fried onions too. Naturally, this also applies to Martians who grew up in New Minnesota.
