People who are into petplay often frame it in terms of comfort, attention, and structure. It can be explained as a desire to “be taken care of and guided,” emphasising a simplified role within a relationship where responsibility is reduced, and expectations are clear. Such a dynamic might be interpreted through the concept of regression—a psychological return to earlier developmental states. Freud might suggest that adopting a “pet-like” role symbolically echoes early childhood experiences of dependency, where care, feeding, and protection were provided by a caregiver.
Freud may have viewed it as an unconscious desire for recognition, validation, or the expression of repressed wishes.
Freud proposed that sexuality is ultimately tied to the drive toward creation, continuation, and life preservation. Freud believed humans were driven by Eros, the instinct toward survival, reproduction, creativity, and connection. He might argue that fantasies centred on fertility exaggerate this basic reproductive drive into a psychologically charged symbol. Freud also paid close attention to the dynamics of control. Depending on the individual, he might interpret the fantasy as expressing unconscious wishes related to dominance, submission, possession, trust, or dependence rather than literal parenthood. What emotional need does the fantasy satisfy? Does it provide reassurance? A feeling of being wanted? A sense of intimacy? Security? Importance?
