Very interesting. I don't usually do tragedies myself, and when I do, I tend to pick the hopeful sort. I blame it on my bleeding pusher. Hm... Trying to keep that in mind, I'd likely recommend Grave of the Fireflies (movie, a story about children during wartime), Inu-Oh (movie, a surreal musical about a creature-boy trying to be treated as a person), Erased (12 episodes, finished, a man goes back in time to try to prevent a tragedy), Frieren (38 episodes, ongoing, a sad but hopeful story about a long-lived individual retracing the steps she took with those she lost and making new connections), And The Summer Hikaru Died (12 episodes, ongoing, a horror story about a young man whose best friend has died and been possessed by an entity beyond his understanding, who still wants to be his friend.)
