Well we didn't really reproduce with each other to begin with? We had a progenitor of the mother grub... We are a race that reproduces by the use of a mediator of sorts to get the material fertilized. We cannot fertilize our material when we have a pailing session without a pail and eventually we figured out we needed one to deposit our material into the progenitor. So we depended on the progenitor who eventually evolved into what we all know as the Mother grub. How we figured that out?
