Many, many, many sweeps ago, the first few BLs were created as commentary on the gender politics of trolls. Dramas more than what you think of in current day BL. This can be connected to current light and the terms "seme" and "uke", one man who was considered the dominant and most masculine of this pairing — the second man who was considered weak, soft and effeminate of the pairing. The terms themselves even mean "to attack" and "to bear", as it is expected for the uke to simply take what the seme offers. As is their role in the normative quadrant expected of us. Often by having the uke be a lower caste and the seme be higher caste, these same ideals are reinforced. These were critiques on the roles many castes and genders are forced into, especially jadebloods. Trolls on Alternia will like to tell you that there is no 'enforced' gender, and hatred / preference can be delegated to one offs. But this is highly untrue. There is a historic amount of evidence showing the discrimination of trolls for what they are, or want to be. Even highbloods suffer from this. Though the discrimination is more commonly prejudiced against lowbloods. Especially when it doesn't fit these 'roles' the Alternian Empire 'encourage' on the troll population. Specifically those who are women. You may still be inclined to believe the propaganda fed to you by the matriarchy if you want. But I want you to at least take away something from this. We are fitted into roles, and if you want to be yourself… be yourself. Don't be what they want you to be. Additionally, in current day Alternia, BL is still a forefront against censorship by the Empire. Most mangakas don't create by the standards set by the empire, as crude and lewd as it sounds — their position in the modern day markets inspire many to continue to create and be as they are. Especially in working around traditional "seme" and "uke" roles and allowing them to be subsersive to reader expecation and offer new perspectives. Most BL exists to go against the system and allows castes and different genders to express and explore something they would never otherwise get to. This is expression, art. To be vile, to be filthy — in a way means to be free. What and what you can't read, what and what you can't create. To be unburdened from those demands. BL in a way, is a major stand against the Empire. Even in something as simple as a story about moirails pailing. That itself goes against what and what isn't taboo in troll society. To be creative means to feel like you're fighting a losing battle. And unless you move past what they want from you, you won't ever get to be what you want to be. Take those who create, who write, who draw — no matter how crude or lewd it can be — as inspiration. If they can do it, you can too. And one day, maybe you'll inspire someone else the very same way. You may feel like a useless radical, inspiring other useless radicals — but they can't squash you all. No matter how hard they try.
