(( neat! it's nice to see when he throws something at the wall and it actually sticks. my personal impression has been that the racism is largely passive (pervasive, but passive) and i feel like the most active bigotry in hs is the ableism? like wow they really did go hard on caliborn having a learning disability

((I actually am not even sure that the intention was for Damara to be white. ((Yes there's the "fake troll Japanese" line everyone points to... but there's also like 3-4 other lines where she/the Handmaid is referred to as "from the east" or "asian" or "Japanese". So unless Damara is just super good at asianfishing even as a literal grub, or every character means that sarcastically, I think maybe what was actually meant by that line is that she's "fake" in the sense that she was created by a white guy intentionally stereotypically with no attempt to be at all accurate to a Japanese person, not that Damara is in-universe faking being asian. ((Also, if she's supposed to be white, then why is her english bad? I'm not saying bad English is a requirement for being Asian but Hussie was clearly going for the broken English, Me Love You Long Time stereotype and that detail doesn't really make sense if she's just a weeb. What's her actual first language in that case? Or is the bad English also fake and Damara herself is racist?? Idk I just got rid of the broken English thing altogether for my Damara because of all that bullshit. ((Anyway, those are my thoughts as someone who spends a lot of time with Damara as a character. Maybe there's some line from Hussie that directly calls her white but based on what we have I think it's more likely that people took the one line from the self-insert too literally, and she is just asian.
