Mother's day is always hard. Perhaps I am worse at dealing with grief than other Roses or perhaps I am simply worse at hiding it. Sometimes I have trouble sorting through the memories of a toddler and the memories of a housecat. Looking up at her with such love, saying my syllable for uppies. Sometimes she would forget to feed me before passing out. Both of me. In both cases, Rose would pick up the slack. I shouldn't have had to, but I'm so glad I did. I forgive her, of course. I'm not sure I'm capable of hating her anymore even if she did crush me to death with a book. I don't excuse a second of it, but I understand. She should have gotten help - with the bottle, or with me - but how could she ask? How could she go out and face a world she knew would end before her daughter had the chance to grow up? ((Yes there's the "fake troll Japanese" line everyone points to... but there's also like 3-4 other lines where she/the Handmaid is referred to as "from the east" or "asian" or "Japanese". So unless Damara is just super good at asianfishing even as a literal grub, or every character means that sarcastically, I think maybe what was actually meant by that line is that she's "fake" in the sense that she was created by a white guy intentionally stereotypically with no attempt to be at all accurate to a Japanese person, not that Damara is in-universe faking being asian. ((Also, if she's supposed to be white, then why is her english bad? I'm not saying bad English is a requirement for being Asian but Hussie was clearly going for the broken English, Me Love You Long Time stereotype and that detail doesn't really make sense if she's just a weeb. What's her actual first language in that case? Or is the bad English also fake and Damara herself is racist??
