Attention, #RosesPoolsideDriveIn attendees. The time has finally come. After many weeks of teasing, next week's feature will be Robert Egger's 2015 The Witch. Also known/stylized as The VVitch: A New England Folktale. Set in seventeenth-century New England, the film follows a family who, after separating themselves from their community, find themselves living at the edge of an increasingly hostile wilderness. Something is wrong. Naturally, everyone has a different explanation for what that might be, and none of those explanations are particularly reassuring. The Witch is a slow, atmospheric piece of horror, built less around sudden shocks than around isolation, religious anxiety, paranoia, and the creeping suspicion that something is watching from just beyond the edge of the firelight. It is also a film that rewards attention to language, symbolism, and the peculiar psychology of people attempting to maintain certainty in circumstances that seem specifically designed to destroy it. I recommend watching it patiently. Let the unease accumulate. Resist the urge to ask whether things could possibly become worse. They can. As is customary, the portal to my back yard will be opened at around 7:30 EST, with the movie starting at about 8. Hope to see you there. Unquirk for content warnings.
