Okay. For this next week's #RosesPoolsideDriveIn we're taking a small break away from horror, and we're exploring other, perhaps more mature concepts. I made a promise to @handMaid and I intend to keep it. I also recommend, if you plan on attending, do a little bit of research on the movie before opting in. This upcoming edition's selection is Nymphomaniac, a 2013 film by Lars von Trier, which is ostensibly about sex, but I suspect that description is deliberately reductive. It is, rather more interestingly, about compulsion, self-narration, shame, and the curious human tendency to construct elaborate philosophies around the things we cannot stop doing. The film follows Joe, a woman recounting the history of her sexual life to a stranger who has found her injured in an alley. This is apparently the sort of situation in which one begins telling one's life story. I have been assured that this is not standard practice, although I suppose it depends on the alley. What follows is less a conventional erotic drama than an extended exercise in intellectualized confession, with the film repeatedly asking whether we can ever describe ourselves honestly—or whether every confession is simply another form of performance. #nsfw #suggestive
