troll steely dan'S debut album, "can'T buy a thrill", is some of their strongest work. while the general genre of the whole album is a little hard to pin down exactly (mostly soft rock, with some troll latin hints and a bit of jazz?), the songs on it are all very easy listens. tunes you can have in the background and calmly listen to, or ones you could groove along to if you'RE in the mood, with even some of the more sad tracks (midnite cruiser, for example) not really evoking such a deep feeling of sadness. the juxtaposition between troll steely dan'S sad, cynical song topics, while being rather upbeat, really helps you to process a lot of the things they'RE talking about. though almost every song speaks of losers or outright jerks, you can'T help but nod your head along. one of the grooviest tracks on the album, only a fool would say that, while cynical to the world we live in, still keeps up the theme of having a great, uplifting tune. an easy listen. on top of that, it'S pretty profound (and is part of the reason why, even i, think the way i do today). troll donald fagen stated sweeps ago that he once knew a seadweller who believed that one day, the world will be free for all trolls regardless of caste. the song isn'T about putting these ideals down, but more the foolishness one needs to have to have such an outlook in the world we live in, especially coming from such a lofty place of privilege. overall, i think the soft cynicism of troll steely dan really shines through in this album. though we live in a world surrounded by assholes, murderers and outright losers (like me!), the gentle tunes of the album makes me feel that, hey, maybe we'LL be alright. a lot of us are still young, after all. phuntr'S rating: 8.9/10
