Aaahh, interesting question! I think the misinterpretation of love versus salvation comes into play. As God is our Father, His love will always be unconditional. However, just because we have His love does not mean we have his acceptance into Heaven, which /is/ conditional. Just because He loves us does not mean we are doing right by Him. Those who stray from God's teachings are nonetheless His children who He loves without restraint, but consequences are just as natural an occurrence. When we sin, God isn't mad at us, nor does His love stop. He's just disappointed! - Mark 10:29-30
