It is a weapon in its own right, just by the size- but if a twelve is rolled it turns into a 20 sided die- then a pair of d10s for a d100... then back down to a d4. It cycles through the standard set of dice when the max number is rolled, but otherwise seems to be a (set of) normal di(c)e.)
