Hello, Chittr. Against my better judgment, tonight's feature for #RosesPoolsideDriveIn is going to conjoin my call for very shitty movies. Tonight's film is The Gingerdead Man, directed by Charles Band and released in 2005. The premise is, in essence, exactly what the title has promised you: a murderous gingerbread man. Not metaphorically. Not as an elaborate exercise in postmodern interpretation. An actual homicidal pastry. After a convicted murderer is executed, his ashes somehow find their way into a batch of gingerbread dough, producing an ambulatory confection with murder on its tiny mind and considerably more confidence than any baked good has a right to possess. There is something rather refreshing about a film that has looked at the established traditions of horror cinema and concluded that what they have really been missing is weaponized holiday baking. This is not a film that requires extensive preparation, philosophical contemplation, or indeed much faith in the dignity of the human species. It is campy, ridiculous, gleefully cheap, and entirely aware that the phrase "evil gingerbread man" is doing most of the heavy lifting. So please suspend your disbelief, your standards, and possibly your appetite for baked goods. Enjoy the film. And should anyone offer you a suspiciously sentient cookie afterward, I recommend declining. We have learned nothing from horror cinema if we cannot at least manage that. Unquirk for content warnings.
