Good evening, #abcc nation. It's my #watchparty shift once again, and it is a really good one for #meatweek Tonight's film for #Abcc-EST is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, directed by Tim Burton and released in 2007. It is a musical about a barber who returns to Victorian London after suffering a grave injustice, intent on settling accounts with the people responsible. He reunites with Mrs. Lovett, a baker whose meat pies have been experiencing something of a commercial downturn, and together they embark on a business venture that is, from an ethical standpoint, somewhat difficult to recommend. There is something wonderfully appropriate about setting a tale of revenge in a city where poverty, corruption, and institutional cruelty have made human life seem so remarkably inexpensive. Naturally, the logical response is to introduce a razor to the situation and make the local food supply everyone's problem. But beneath the bloodshed and pitch-black humor lies a tragedy about vengeance, obsession, and the ease with which a person can become indistinguishable from the very cruelty they once sought to punish. And then, of course, everyone sings about it. The music is gorgeous, the atmosphere is suitably miserable, and the moral implications are considerably less appetizing than the pies. So please enjoy the show. Try not to get too attached to the supporting cast. And if anyone offers you a suspiciously affordable meat pie afterward, I trust you will exercise a reasonable degree of skepticism. It's also #substance night so, do with that what you will.
