WIKIPE-TAN'S ARTICLE OF THE NIGHT IS ABOUT… SBURB! Sburb (stylized as SBURB) is the human name for a sandbox-style game that takes place superimposed over the real world, rather than in a virtual space¹. The game is known as Sgrub (stylized as SGRUB) to trolls². In the game, the server player is able to manipulate the client's environment in real time in a manner reminiscent of The Sims³. The client of the game has no need to interact with the computer and can freely roam around completing objectives. Computers are only necessary for interacting with other players and performing actions like downloading Grist with GristTorrent. Actions available to the server player include expanding upon and manipulating the client's home, including by deploying game objects such as the Totem Lathe, in exchange for Grist; and moving existing objects in the client's environment, though the server player cannot manipulate objects directly affecting the client player. The server cannot observe the game outside of a certain radius of their client's home, allowing them to continue building up their client's home as the Hero explores their planet and furthers their quest. Anyone who is going to play SBURB in a particular session, at any point in their life, will be a dreamer in one of the moons of that session even before the game begins; some awaken and are free to explore their dream planets long before the game starts⁴. The game comes in multiple phases: climbing through The Seven Gates⁵, defeating the Denizens⁵, the Ultimate Alchemy⁵, and the Reckoning⁵ (up to and including the final confrontation with the Black King and Queen), to name a few. As the gameplay goes on, it is revealed that the ultimate purpose of SBURB is… Oops, now we're getting into spoiler territory! I'll cut the article here so as to not ruin the experience for new players! I've never been one for video games, but SBURB sounds kind of fun! What do you think? Should I play it? If this has piqued your interest like it has mind, read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SBURB Thank you to @sburbDev for suggesting this topic!!! ¹ Video games overlaid onto the real world is a common medium for games on Alternia. For more examples of games with real world elements, see also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_live_action_role-playing_game ² I've seen a few other non-troll and non-human species on Chittr as well. Do they have their own versions of SBURB? Let me know! ³ The Sims is a series of life simulation video games developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts (EA). The franchise has sold nearly ²⁰⁰ million copies worldwide (note: these figures are specific to Earth), and is one of the best-selling video game series of all time. It is also part of the larger Sim series, started by SimCity in ¹⁹⁸⁹. ⁴ Wow! That sounds exciting! Wikipe-tan wishes she had dreams instead of horrible terrible nightmares every morning! ⁵ Spoiler alert!! #WikipetanArticleOfTheNight #Sburb
Reminder: SBURB is a free, open-source project; as a result, we are 100% ad free. If you play a third party version of SBURB and experience the following: - Large Advertisement objects floating in space visible to the naked eye, - Advertisements between scene transitions, - An unskippable, 2 minute ad every time you visit the Medium, - Sudden, uncharacteristic NPC dialogue that advertises real-world products, - Or randomly sponsored alchemizable items, Please understand these are not native features to SBURB. It is advised to Scratch the session and try again. Copies which sport ads may also have malware contained in them that may harm the integrity of the game.
Gameplay Tip: Good teams promote good skill. Bad teams promote no skill. Make sure before starting the game to select and establish a team you can trust. Otherwise, for the better of the rest of Paradox Space, the session will fail, and with it, be Scratched to a better permutation.
SBURB v.2026.5.16 Released. Please see website for download and fork. Patch note changes: - The 1928 Caredol Street bug has been resolved. Upon visiting the same location and identifying the same vase, nothing happens. - Space players can no longer destroy planet lands by shrinking them and consuming them whole. All player planet lands have an atmosphere object that cannot despawn nor can it be destroyed; This atmosphere object can be bypassed only by the relevant player of that land, and while players can teleport in, they cannot go through the atmosphere itself. This means any planets that are shrunk and consumed will pass through safely while the player continues gameplay in the planet at the proportional size. - We have increased romance route visibility by having any romanceable NPCs flash a heart only the player involved can see if and only if they have triggered the route directly. - Holding the crafting button for too long no longer results in longer objects. This does not undo objects made prior by this bug. - The quest "Chancey Chancellor" has been moved to the Derse Branch of NPC quests. - "Sulfur" modifier for player lands no longer modifies breathable content in them, only the surface itself and its contents. - Enemies that spawn in forests have had their spawnrate increased by 5%. - The Totem Lathe has now updated its hand grip to be permanently universal, and no longer generates a random grip direction. - We have updating the bounding box for NPC Enemies; Imps bundled in a contained space will simply not allow more in that space per their hitbox space allotment in that contained area. This has resolved Imps phasing through walls if enough are in a specific space (~100). - Upon hitting the 20 active quest limit, NPCs will no longer remain silent around you at all times. Please send any feedback, glitch reports, and recommendations to @sburbDev for further research and refinement of the game experience. Copyright SKAIANET 2026(C), all rights reserved.
Known Bug: If 100 imps are put in a five square meter space, and one more is put in, another will phase out through the wall. They will continue phasing out in the direction the vector has jettisoned them until there is no longer a physical obstruction. This will be fixed next patch.
Reminder: We do not use AI to create any of our work. It is the SKAIANET promise to ensure that all code, assets, art, and game design are created without any algorithmic generation. SKAIANET and the team behind SBURB work hard in creating this game and are proud of not only the work they do, but pursue innovation in achieving that vision on their own.
Gameplay Tip: While SBURB provides powers strong enough to cut celestial objects, remember to factor in gravitational fields into terraforming at all times. Remember to also factor in the gravitational field of other objects, and that through the laws of thermodynamics, heat manifests through kinetic energy when introduced to friction, which is encountered in atmospheres. Gravitational pull does not cease when a celestial body is split in half.
Gameplay Tip: There is no life system or extra lives in SBURB. Only the God Tier mechanic and the Soulbot mechanic exist as systems to avoid fatality within the game. Kernelsprites, while providing a soul reanimation, are game constructs, and any decisions involving them should be quantified as such. Make your life count.
Reminder: Our staff are available to discuss any issues with SBURB or related instances that are unmodded or not distributed by third parties at any time. Anyone is free to send a direct message and you will be connected to a SKAIANET agent who can best resolve or educate on the issue you're experiencing.
Gameplay Tip: If you suffer a fatal encounter, you may be able to purchase or construct Soulbots which allow your soul a vessel to inhabit temporarily in the face of loss. Soulbots are a valid gameplay vector, but beware: Their power is limited by both their physical form and their craftsmanship. Only players with extrinsic abilities, such as Time players, may be able to use them to their full benefit.
Gameplay Tip: Sessions are meant to be played with 4 or more players. A game session of 2 players or less may result in higher than average gameplay difficulty and impediments caused by the session failsafe mechanisms built into the experience. The more players involved, the easier the session is.
Known Exploit: When God Tiering, if the player on the bed to be God Tiered perishes during a session data split, the god tiered player will emerge alongside the reanimated body of the dead player. A session data split only occurs if both the session connection and time within the linear floor are both interrupted at the same time in which an infinitesimal pocket of unknown permutation occurs. This is an exceedingly rare event that cannot be caused artificially. If the reanimated body of the dead player before god tier prototyping emerges, and you have confirmed the presence of the god tiered player, please kill this reanimated body immediately. The reanimated body is no longer a player, and is extant data construct from errant data that, if allowed to continue existing, will corrupt the session entirely.
Known Bug: In the quest, "Chancey Chancellor", if you accept the quest in the main government building in Prospit and then proceed to defeat the fully prototyped Prospitian King, then return back to talk to the same NPC you spoke to before to accept the quest, there is a 5% chance they may have turned into a Dersian. We will be patching this next update by moving this quest to the Derse branch of NPC Quests.
