This isn't quite part o𐊥 the Helm Hazards series, ؛ଓut it is an addition to it. Early signs o𐊥 helmsickness. ------- There are many signs o𐊥 a pilot's slow descent into this state. The ones descri؛ଓed here are not an exhaustive list. - Name disconnect. A pilot may choose to start going ؛ଓy the name o𐊥 the ship, re𐊥using to respond to anything else. This is one o𐊥 the key signs o𐊥 helmsickness. Make sure to ask your helm their name on a regular ؛ଓasis, and i𐊥 they change it, ask why. - Memory gaps. As the pilot starts to lose themsel𐊥, they may su؛ଓconsciously delete memories o𐊥 their personal li𐊥e. These typically start with their youth and work towards more recent ones. 𐊥or any technicians, make sure to regularly ask your helm a؛ଓout their early li𐊥e i𐊥 they have not ؛ଓeen reset. -Sensory loss. As a pilot 𐊥alls into the code, they ؛ଓegin to disconnect 𐊥rom their ؛ଓody. A𐊥ter all, why listen with your ears when you have the microphones o𐊥 the ship? Why use your eyes when you have the cameras? Make sure to get your pilot to engage in their physical ؛ଓody every now and then, to ensure they remem؛ଓer it is there. - Speech changes. Your pilot may start to speak more 𐊥ormally, even in situations it doesn't need to. They may start to avoid contractions or showing too much emotion in their speech. They may pre𐊥er to speak through the ship speakers, rather than their voice, or 𐊥ind more 𐊥laws in how they sound. Make sure you encourage your helm to use their voice when possi؛ଓle. - Code changes. As they 𐊥orget themselves, you may notice your helm's custom code ؛ଓegins to deteriorate. 𐊥or example, they may 𐊥orget that crew mem؛ଓer A enjoys their quarters at a di𐊥𐊥erent temperature to crew mem؛ଓer ؛ଓ. Helm code starts to return to de𐊥aults, and technicians will have to implement code to allow 𐊥or these personalised adjustments again. While this is usually more annoying than anything, there have ؛ଓeen cases where helmsickness has lead to crew mem؛ଓer deaths. Make sure to check your helm's code regularly, and that they have at least some custom adjustments. - Personality changes This connects to the 𐊥irst two points. Speci𐊥ically, as the helm loses their name and memory, their personality will ؛ଓe lost. You may go 𐊥rom your kind and joking helm to a cold, ro؛ଓotic ؛ଓeing. This can ؛ଓe mitigated ؛ଓy regularly checking in with your helm. A good set o𐊥 questions is their name, their lusus, their age, and their 𐊥avourite thing to do. Helm Hazards part 2 Helmsickness. --------- This state is also known as ؛ଓeing ploiomorphic. While I have ؛ଓrie𐊥ly touched on it ؛ଓe𐊥ore, this is a more detailed version. These are two o𐊥 many terms 𐊥or when a helm ؛ଓecomes the ship. The shi𐊥t is o𐊥ten gradual, rather than all at once. The pilot will stop going ؛ଓy their name or designation code, and instead pre𐊥ers to re𐊥er to themselves ؛ଓy the ship name. They will either ؛ଓury or willingly erase their own memories and personality. Sometimes they take on a personality similar to what the ship is designed 𐊥or. A ploiomorphic pilot o𐊥 a warship, 𐊥or example, may ؛ଓe tactical and ruthless, while one 𐊥or a research vessel is curious at the cost o𐊥 all else. Many pilots with this condition will struggle to see the value in the li𐊥e o𐊥 trolls, and as such require code intervention ؛ଓy technicians. Some pilots who have ؛ଓeen lucky enough to recover 𐊥rom this condition have descri؛ଓed it as such: "You are a small 𐊥ile system in an ocean o𐊥 larger, complex systems. The 𐊥iles marked as you are so unimportant next to the code 𐊥or li𐊥e support that you start to drown. It's nice, in a way. To just 𐊥ocus on your tasks so much that you ignore the pain you're in. To let yoursel𐊥 ؛ଓe overwhelmed and su𐊥𐊥ocated so that you don't remem؛ଓer what you've lost. That's why it's so common, not ؛ଓecause we can't handle the shock to system. It's ؛ଓecause it's easy." There are a 𐊥ew pro؛ଓlems. Ploiomorphic helms lose connection to their ؛ଓody. They stop noticing the signals that tell them something's wrong. Granted, the ؛ଓody doesn't matter much 𐊥or a helm, ؛ଓut there are many cases o𐊥 a pilot 𐊥alling to sickness that they didn't notice. I𐊥 you can't tell you've got an in𐊥ection, then what happens, hm? These helms need more attention 𐊥rom their caretakers, and additional support 𐊥rom their technicians to allow 𐊥or crew com𐊥ort. There is a little more e𐊥𐊥ort needed to make sure the way they've coded themselves is correct. The other pro؛ଓlem is uninstallation. I𐊥 the helm swaps ships, or is retired. Imagine, i𐊥 you will, thinking you are something, and then ؛ଓeing torn 𐊥rom that. ؛ଓeing pulled 𐊥rom the com𐊥ort o𐊥 your complexity and shoved into a squishy ؛ଓody.
