On this Dirk-aversary, we bleakly recall a foolish man that purposefully left before his time. Upon his initial passing, many moons and many suns prior, ectobiological family and friends mourned. We provided eulogies to preserve his memory not as he was, but rather how the populace would prefer to recall his image. Anguish, much like any fickle creature of the heart, covered all faults with fondness. We (primarily Roxy, Jake and Jane) spoke of moments of bravery, wisdom, and devotion. His passing was marked as a tragedy, as if it were an unfortunate disease or natural disaster that stripped him from this world. Enough time has passed, allowing for adequate retrospection. Dirk Strider died as he lived, with narcissistic control. He exited and purposefully neglected those who would be left behind in the abyss. The irrelevant future that would come was a prophecy buried in his passing. Perhaps, through some delusion of grandeur, he assumed those left behind would not care for the eventual storm looming on the horizon. Predictably short-sighted, the revelation came. For some of us, sooner than others. Their denial is a symptom of our failed timeline. On this Dirk-aversary, I choose to recall Dirk as he was: self-centered and cowardly.
