You're correct, though I honestly don't know what did happen to 'PM'. I've wondered the same myself.
It does stand for Direct Message, you've got the ticket! I've seen some people use PM still but I think because certain platforms of social media call the function a Direct Message that it's just become common nomenclature to say "DM".
