I'd argue the effect it's had on society began when the original 4chan post started making it's way across the wider internet.
The original post didn’t have actual entities in it, which was the entire premise of the liminal space in between. We are specifically dealing in entities and the movie came out very recently. So, for the purposes of this joke post, that is what was referenced.
