Hmm not VERY far. They get introduced... maybe 1/3rd of the way through the first book? Half at the latest. They are an elf and a dwarf whom, for very complicated and nasty historical reasons, culturally just kind of hate each other and don't understand each others values. By the end of the trilogy they are so closely bonded it's very hard to see as a straight platonic thing LOL
