Some of you are rather fond of calling psionics "mental powers," which is just as informative as calling digestion a "stomach power." The thinkpan is an organ. It is a complicated one, mind you. But an organ nonetheless. Trolls possess the same broad neurological necessities one would expect of any sufficiently sophisticated animal: sensory processing, motor control, memory, endocrine regulation, autonomic function, and so forth. The unusual portion is a set of structures threaded through and immediately beneath the ordinary neural tissue which have no especially useful human analogue. For convenience, I will refer to this system as the psionic complex. It is composed of three major components. Some neurosurgeonerals of Alternia refer to them by the shorthand of the lattice, node, and resonator. I will elaborate on the specifics shortly, but understand that each of these structures has its own substructures. The first component mentioned, the cerebral lattice, is a dense web of conductive tissue distributed primarily around the frontal, parietal, and temporal regions of the thinkpan. It is similar enough to ordinary neural tissue under crude examination that those crude trolls examining it tend to miss it. Its cells are considerably richer in conductive metals and electroactive proteins than the surrounding matter, and they form repeating geometric bundles rather than conventional branching neural networks. These bundles carry and synchronize electrical impulses. A normal thinkpan contains billions of individual neural events occurring simultaneously. The cerebral lattice can force enormous numbers of those signals into phase with one another. Once sufficiently synchronized, the activity ceases behaving like mere thought and begins producing a coherent psionic field. This is one of the fundamental cornerstones of psionic biology and of psionic practice. A psion does not "think very hard" and move an object. Their thinkpan converts synchronized neural activity into an external physical effect. This keeps particularly determined idiots from developing their own telekinesis. The second structure is the psionic node. This is a small organ seated deep within the thinkpan, approximately where several major sensory and endocrine pathways converge. Its precise shape varies considerably between castes and, even more importantly, between individuals. If you were to open a troll with negligible psionic aptitude, you would scarcely find more than a knot of this specialized tissue. In a powerful psion, it can be enormous relative to the surrounding structures. It would be vascularized to maximize activity and connected to the cerebral lattice with bundles of conductive fibers. This node performs two functions. It regulates output, and it determines the category of output the thinkpan is capable of producing. This is where the popular notion of "different psychic powers" becomes rather strange. Telekinesis, communion, mind control, prophetic sensitivity, dream intrusion, and the various phenomena collectively referred to as chucklevoodoo are not entirely separate mechanisms. The primary difference between these abilities would be the node. A goldblood whose node is heavily integrated with motor planning and spatial processing may externalize those systems. The thinkpan ordinarily calculates force, direction, velocity, weight, distance, and position so that the body may reach out and move an object. The telekinetic merely eliminates the inconvenient requirement that the arms participate. The third and final component is the cranial resonator. This is where this little system goes from novel to unpleasant. The inner surface of the skull contains microscopic crystalline deposits interwoven with the meninges and vascular channels surrounding the thinkpan. In most trolls, these deposits are sparse. In gifted trolls, they form branching structures around the cerebral lattice. They are similar to biological antennae. The node generates, the lattice synchronizes, and the resonator couples the resulting activity to the world outside the nugbone. Without it, a powerful psionic thinkpan would accomplish little besides cooking itself. Which, incidentally, still happens often. Headaches, nosebleeds, eye hemorrhage, seizures, temporary blindness, sensory distortion, aphasia, and loss of consciousness are all perfectly reasonable consequences to expect when your resonator matrix is damaged. It is important to understand why different hemotypes have different relationships to psionic structures. Different hemotypes deposit different concentrations of metals, pigments, proteins, and trace compounds into nervous tissue during development. These compounding elements result in certain changes: conductivity, vascularization, and resonator and node densities and shapes. Most importantly, they alter where the psionic node establishes its strongest connections. This is why psychic abilities tend to cluster by caste rather than forming a collection of caste-exclusive abilities. Blood does not contain "telekinesis." Blood creates the developmental conditions under which a certain kind of psionic architecture is more likely to form. Rustblood psionics appear to suffer from unusually permissive sensory filtering. Aradia Megido did not require a specialized organ for hearing ghosts. Her thinkpan simply admitted information most trolls automatically discard. Bronzeblood communion externalizes the machinery used to interpret other creatures. At sufficient strength, it becomes influence. Goldbloods have the most developed raw psionic architecture, with enlarged nodes, dense resonators, and extremely conductive neural tissue. This grants tremendous output at the cost of instability. Telekinesis, involuntary discharge, migraines, and prophetic noise are different consequences of a nervous system coping with psionic information. Cerulean domination is far more specialized. These psionics interface directly with motor and executive pathways. The victim need not cease thinking. They only cease being the primary authority over the body. Purpleblood chucklevoodoos instead interfere with fear, sleep, memory, and perception. Why seize someone's limbs when you may alter what their thinkpan considers frightening, significant, familiar, or real? Success is not determined by raw power alone. Psionic abilities depend upon resonance between nervous systems. Some thinkpans synchronize readily; others resist. Blood influences both architecture and compatibility. These categories may also overlap. A troll may possess telekinesis and clairaudience, communion and emotional projection, or any number of hybrid expressions. The classifications are ours. The anatomy is less considerate of the taxonomical categories provided. All of this is metabolically expensive. Psionic use consumes enormous amounts of oxygen and glucose, producing exhaustion, overheating, migraines, tremors, hemorrhage, seizures, and, when pushed sufficiently far, catastrophic damage to the thinkpan. So there is no mystical reservoir of caste energy involved. For the inevitable "TL;DR" request. Blood shapes the thinkpan. The node determines what it can affect. The lattice produces coherence. The resonator carries the signal beyond the skull.

I often wondered, in those moments, whether or not she could still be used for paint. Did her blood regenerate? Would wounds heal? There was just so much we didn't know... Some of you wear your tack like you're actual ponies putting it on. Remember, this is not simply a concern with your aesthetics. Though, your aesthetic is e%tremely damaged. This is your safety. Your comfort, dignity, function, and symbolism are contained within your respect for the noble equine arts. Tack is not some random decoration. A harness is not a series of random straps. The bridle is more than an e%cuse to put buckles upon your visage. Proper tack is communication. It communicates to the room what role you are entering, what level for formality you are observing, what care has been taken, and the competence of your practical fantasy. Improper tack, by contrast, tells the room that someone is a f001ish foal who has no craftsmen in their lives. I can fi% that for a fee. Let us begin with the first principle: equipment must serve the body before it serves the eye. A piece may be beautiful, e%pensive, handmade, imported, polished, dyed, engraved, bell-hung, ribboned, lacquered, or praised by every lowb100d handler you could imagine in the forum threads you peruse. But, if it pinches, slips, pulls, overheats, restricts circulation, interferes with your balance, or forces you into an unsafe position, it is a poor fit. Beauty does not substitute safety. Instead of 8eing the typical d8ting sim, lifestyle sim, or occasional looter shooter that is common to his li8rary, this game is user-descri8ed as an open world survival sim. I chose to dive into it without much research, and ignored the multiplayer function to 8etter immerse myself in the survival mechanics. This was the o8vious correct choice. The game opens to a haunting screen of a man cradling his m8tesprit closely, clearly attempting to comfort her as she is 8andaged and injured in the splash art. There’s a swell of dramatic music, and then thunder claps, lightning flashes, and you see the gruesome truth of the scene revealed as an ela8or8te ruse!!!!!!!! The man is ACTUALLY tearing at the flesh of his lifeless partner, who has yet to rise in undeath to join him in eternal hunger. That is essentially the entire tone of this game. You may not realize it, looking at the cute trash-gru88er8east mascot, 8ut dreariness and loneliness are the main experience, 8eyond the dread of the undead hordes slowly closing in around you. Zom8oid is a game that promises to punish the slightest misstep, and such punishment can very quickly send you into a tailspin of utter desol8tion. My first attempt at the game (post the ro8ust and informative tutorial, of course) was thwarted 8y a 8roken window lock! Had I 8een a8le to pull open the window to make my escape, I likely would have lasted several more in-game days. As it was, I was forced to start over and try again, this time a touch more cautiously. The first area where real mistakes can 8e made are in the character cre8tor screen. There’s a ton of options for how to kneecap your character from the get go, ranging from things to challenge yourself with, and work around, such as 8eing underweight or hard of hearing, all the way to the truly formida8le illiteracy tr8t, which makes it completely impossi8le to 8oost level growth 8y reading skill manuals. If you choose to 8e illter8te, and don’t know how to oper8 generators, you’re shit out of luck when the power goes out! 8etter hope you like to camp!!!!!!!! Taking positive attri8utes su8tracts points from your character sheet, while taking negatives adds them 8ack. I think it is a very 8alanced system that challenges you to take weaknesses that you can grow your character out of, such as 8eing unfit, overweight, or overall weak. Practicing fitness routines while not escaping from zom8ie assaults will eventually pay off, as you gain muscle and agility, just like real life! Food and rest are also required, much like real life. The nutritional system is fairly ro8ust, 8ut pretty punishing, though it does do an incredi8le jo8 of accounting for physical exertion for food and sleep needs. Your character can also 8ecome 8ored, or even depressed, which means a variety of food and entertainment experiences (such as 8ooks or tv shows) are required to stave off the inner demons of the zom8iod apocalypse. It’s rare to see a survival simul8tion take into account the needs of the mind and soul as well as the needs of the 8ody! There’s also a very ela8or8te crafting system, including the possi8ility to craft your own hive from scratch, crafting weapons and gear, and repairing or cr8ting your very own clothing and armor to fend off the hordes with. Each of these systems dovetail together to make an awesomely in depth and challenging game that somehow doesn’t start to feel like an organiz8tion sim until you’ve 8een playing the same save for several nights str8! As for gameplay, there are myriads of options to customize and tailor the experience to your desires. If you’re more interested in a relaxed approach, may8e a focus on the ranching and farming portions of the gameplay loop would 8e more your speed. If you find yourself a god among zom8oid slayers, perhaps you’d prefer to try the challenge options? And, like I mentioned 8efore, there IS a solid multiplayer 8ase out there, though I haven’t personally delved into that area of play yet. All in all, a solid 8/10. There are still game 8r8king 8ugs to 8e found AAAAAAAAALL over the place, which is crazy for a game that’s 8een in development for 6.9 sweeps! That’s 15 years for you humans out there, 8tw. Appar8ntly someone even stole the hard drive that had the early game stored on it, forcing them to start over completely once.
